Built like a workshop, finished like a bar
Most garden bars are a shed with a hole cut in the front. Ours start from the workshop build, so 60x40mm framing, 15mm tongue and groove and a floor that takes weight, because a bar ends up carrying kegs, a fridge and people leaning on it. The hatch has a hinged cover that drops down and locks, so you can shut it up properly in October instead of letting the weather in all winter.
Power, and why to think about it early
A fridge, lights and a speaker need a proper supply, not an extension lead trailing out the back door. Decide before you order. We can wire the building ready for an electrician to connect, which is a lot cheaper than retrofitting once the cladding is on. Armoured cable out to a garden building is notifiable work, so it needs a qualified sparky either way.
Sizes and what fits
An 8x6 gives you a bar run, two stools and an under counter fridge. A 10x8 means you can seat people inside as well as at the hatch, which in this climate matters more than anyone likes to admit. Bigger than that and you are into cabin territory, where the hatch becomes a nice extra rather than the point of it.
Planning and neighbours
A garden bar counts as an outbuilding like any other, so under 2.5m high near a boundary and not in front of the house. Licensing does not come into it when you are serving your own guests. Noise does. A bar right up against a shared fence is a complaint waiting to happen, so site it off the boundary if the garden allows.
