The main difference is the shape of the roof. 

An apex shed has two sloping roof panels that meet at a central ridge, which provides generous headroom through the middle of the building and allows rainwater to run off on both sides, preventing pooling and leaks.

A pent shed has a single roof panel that slopes from one side to the other, making it a popular option for modern gardens and for positioning alongside a fence, garage, or boundary wall. 

The highest part of the roof is usually above the door, creating comfortable access at the front. Apex sheds are often chosen for their traditional appearance and central headroom, while pent sheds can make efficient use of narrow or restricted gardens.

You won’t need planning permission for your shed as long as it meets specific conditions relating to its location, height, overall size, and use.

You must place a garden shed in your back garden, not your front, and it must have a maximum height of 2.5m below the eaves. It should also be a single-storey building.

Additional considerations may also apply in conservation areas and other designated locations, so it’s best to check with your local authority first. 

A well-built timber shed installed on a strong, level base and properly cared for can remain in good condition for many years.

• Raise the shed above wet ground
• Keep plants, soil, and garden items away from the exterior of the shed
• Check roofs, doors, and windows regularly for cracks or other issues

Start by applying a high-quality timber treatment to the exterior of your shed to protect the wood from damage from UV rays, moisture, and insects. 

Inspect the roofing material after winter and periods of severe weather, looking for lifting edges, tears, or signs of water entering the shed. Gutters, where fitted, should also be cleared so that rainwater can drain away effectively.

We recommend keeping soil, leaves, climbing plants, and stored materials away from the outer walls, as these can trap moisture against the timber and prevent air from circulating.
