Getting the light on the right side

A potting shed is really a greenhouse that keeps your tools dry, and the thing that decides whether it works is which way the glass faces. South or west facing gives you strong afternoon light and a lovely warm bench in spring, but it will cook your seedlings come July. East facing is gentler morning light and the safer bet if you are raising a lot from seed. You pick the glazed side here at no extra cost, so have a look at your garden before you order rather than after.

The bench

Staging sits at about 900mm, which is worktop height, so you can stand and pot up without bending over it. Slatted, so water and compost drop through instead of sitting there.

Ventilation

Go for the opening window rather than fixed. A sealed potting shed in June is no use to anyone and it will bake whatever is on the bench. Cottage and county styles both open. Worth having one on the opposite side to the door so you can get a bit of air through.

Through the winter

It is not frost free, so do not expect miracles. It will keep a light frost off and take the wind off anything dormant, but tender stuff needs heat or a move indoors. Pressure treated timber earns its money here more than almost anywhere, because the inside spends its life damp from watering.

Sizes

6x4 up to 10x6, apex or pent. A 6x4 gives you a bench and room to stand. From 8x6 you get a bench and storage without one getting in the way of the other.
