Why most log stores do not work

Wet wood will not burn, and a log store that traps moisture is worse than chucking a tarp over the pile. Three things decide whether yours does the job. Airflow, clearance off the ground, and the roof overhang. Ours has a slatted back and open front so air crosses the stack, a raised slatted floor so damp does not wick up out of the ground, and a roof that sticks out past the front so rain runs clear instead of straight down into the logs.

How much will it hold?

Seasoned hardwood works out around 350 to 400kg a cubic metre once it is properly dry. Rough rule, allow a cubic metre for every six to eight weeks of an open fire going most evenings through winter. A good bit less if you are feeding a modern stove.

Seasoning, not just stacking

Fresh cut timber can be half water. You want it under 20% before it goes anywhere near the fire, and that usually means a full summer stacked somewhere airy. Two summers if it is oak. Stack it bark side up, leave a gap at the back, and whatever you do, do not sheet it over. Covering the front undoes everything the slats are there for.

Timber and treatment

A log store sits out in the weather with no walls protecting it, so it is all pressure treated rather than dip treated. The preservative gets forced into the timber under pressure instead of sitting on the surface, and that is what the 10 year guarantee against rot is based on.

Where to put it

Against a south or west wall if you can manage it, clear of overhanging trees, and not jammed tight against the brickwork. Leave a hand width so air can get behind it. We deliver and fit free across Merseyside and we will put it where you want it rather than dumping it on the pavement.
