Shed standard, not pet shop standard

Most timber kennels are thin overlap board on a light frame and they last about a winter. Ours use the same tongue and groove cladding, tanalised framing and felt roofing as the sheds, just scaled down. Insulated and lined, with a removable panel so you can actually get in and clean it out rather than reaching through the door.

Sizing a kennel

The dog wants to be able to stand up without ducking, turn round without touching the sides, and lie out fully stretched. Bigger is not automatically better though. A kennel much larger than the dog will not hold body heat in winter, and holding heat is most of what the insulation is there for.

Runs

The run is covered at one end and open at the other on a tanalised frame with weld mesh, so there is shade and shelter without the dog being shut in. Put it somewhere it gets morning sun and afternoon shade if the garden allows, and keep it off a shared boundary. Barking at next door causes more grief than anything else you can put outside.

Base and drainage

This is the bit people skip. A kennel or run sat on bare earth will be a mud bath by December. Slabs or a concrete pad with a slight fall away from the sleeping end make it possible to keep clean and keep the timber out of standing water. Add a base at checkout and we will lay it on the day.
