A room, not a shed with a window stuck in it
The difference between a summer house and a garden office is what happens in February. A summer house is a glazed timber building you will get plenty of use out of from April to September. A studio or an office is insulated, lined and sealed, so it holds its heat and you can work in it all year without sitting there in a coat.
The four types
Summer houses have glazed doors, windows down the sides and a canopy over the front. Cheapest way to get a room in the garden that you will actually use.
Garden offices and studios are insulated and plastered, with anthracite uPVC doors and the wiring run ready. Add the electrics pack and a sparky can connect it when it lands.
Log cabins give you a deeper canopy and wide glazed doors. A room in summer, dry storage through the winter.
Garden bars sit on the workshop frame with a proper hatch and a cover that drops down, so it is still standing in ten years.
Will I need planning permission?
Nearly always no. Permitted development covers an outbuilding under 2.5m high if it is within 2m of a boundary, not in front of the house, and taking up less than half the garden. Conservation areas and listed buildings are the exceptions, and a garden office used purely for business can be too. Send us your postcode and we will check before you order, it takes us two minutes.
Base, power and delivery
Garden rooms want flat, firm ground. Existing slabs or concrete will usually do. If not, stick a base on at checkout and we will lay it on the day. Delivery and fitting are included across Merseyside.
